SEO and keywords are crucial elements in content writing. SEO-optimized content is useful for marketing and boosting a company’s or blog’s online visibility. Whether you are blogging, freelancing, or working as a writer in a reputed company, it is essential to have a basic knowledge of SEO to rank your content and increase your visibility.
This is where content optimization comes in. Content can be properly optimized for SEO using a simple WordPress plugin called Yoast SEO. Yoast deeply analyzes the content and provides color-coded feedback.
In this blog, we will explore content optimization for Yoast and how to structure articles for SEO. Let’s get started.
What is Yoast SEO?
Yoast is a WordPress plugin that provides color-coded feedback by analyzing your content for readability and SEO. When you write or publish your article on WordPress, Yoast gives you a detailed report about the SEO and Readability health of your content.
- Green (SEO-optimized)
- Orange (Average)
- Red (Needs Improvement)
Green light means your content is properly optimized for SEO and Readability. Orange means it is average but could be better. Lastly, Red means that your content is not optimized and needs improvement.
This color-coded feedback is dependent on various criteria in Readability and SEO.
Yoast is divided into four major categories including SEO, Readability, Schema, and Social. We will only explore the features of SEO and Readability as Schema and Social are not relevant to content writing.

Text Length: Total Word Count
Meta Description Length: The length of the Meta Description (150-160 characters)
Keywords in the title, introduction, and subheadings: The focus keyword should be present in these places.

Outbound Links: External links that navigate to third-party websites. (for example, Statista, Wikipedia, or other credible sources)
Yoast analyzes all these factors to give your content an SEO score. For better rankings and higher visibility, it is recommended to optimize your content properly based on these factors.
Readability Features in Yoast SEO
The readability section is very important for SEO writing. It provides a detailed analysis of errors in your content. Yoast analyzes your content based on the following factors:
Word Complexity: It is recommended to use simple words that are suitable for a larger audience.
Transition Words: Words that connect two sentences, like but, and, etc. Around 10% of the sentences should feature transition words.
Active/Passive Voice: Yoast encourages users to write in active voice as it is easier to read than passive Voice.
Consecutive Sentences: Yoast flags consecutive sentences that start with the same word.
Subheading Distribution: Each subheading must contain fewer than 300 words.
Paragraph Length: The paragraph length should be short (3-5 lines).
Sentence Length: Only use a maximum of 20 words in each sentence.
These factors refine your content and make it easier to read for a larger audience. By following Yoast guidelines, you can boost your writing and SEO effectiveness and increase your chances of ranking.
Article Structuring for SEO
Structure is very important for an SEO-optimized article. In fact, most of the articles that rank on Google are properly structured and formatted. But how do you structure an article? There are various ways to do that. Let’s learn.
Introduction (First 100 words): Start with an interesting hook, question, or fact. Use the keyword naturally in the first 100 words.
Catchy Headings (H1 or H2): After the title and intro, the first heading is H1 or H2. Make sure to include the primary keyword and keep it short and engaging.
Subheadings (H3, H4): Divide the article by placing relevant subheadings under the headings. You can use secondary or LSI keywords in subheadings.
Bullet Points: These boost readability and are very suitable for mobile users.
Short Paragraphs: Easier to read. Boosts readability.
Internal and External Links: Link other relevant articles of your website in the article. Also, use external links to third-party websites like Wikipedia to boost the credibility of your content.
Conclusion: A brief summary of the article with a strong CTA at the end.
Images with Alt Text: Every image on your blog must have an SEO-friendly alt tag.
