10 Best AI Girlfriend Apps in 2027: I Tested 10 Apps So You Don’t Waste Your Time With the Wrong Girlfriend

Reading Time: 17 minutes

I spent the last 6 months trying around 10 AI girlfriend apps and found out that most of them only look impressive on the surface. These characters have attractive profiles, and the idea of a virtual AI companion sounds appealing. But soon, you run into message limits, repetitive replies, or a subscription prompt halfway through an interesting conversation.

Here is what nobody understands about AI girlfriends. They are not about sex. Not at all. They are about having an AI companion that understands you, makes you feel heard, remembers that you are stressed about work, and knows how to cheer you up.

After spending weeks having conversations with my AI GF, I have understood which apps are actually useful and give you a reliable AI virtual companion.

Best AI Girlfriend Apps in 20027: My Best Recommendations

1. CandyAI: Best for AI-Generated Images

Candy AI knows how to make a good first impression. The characters look polished, the customization options are appealing, and the image generation gives you something more interesting than a plain chat window.

But I felt the platform was quite restrictive. The free plan gives you just five chat messages, one custom character, and one image. That’s barely enough time to get to know a companion, let alone figure out whether the conversations are any good.

What I Liked

The visual side is Candy AI’s strongest asset. I absolutely loved its generated images and character customization. I can see why that appeals to users who want their AI girlfriends to have a consistent appearance across different scenarios.

I also like that the experience goes beyond just a text conversation with features like voice and additional media features. However, you will need to buy a paid plan for it.

What I Disliked

The free allowance feels more like a teaser than a genuine opportunity to try the platform. Honestly, I wouldn’t even recommend it for free users. Also, paying for a subscription doesn’t necessarily mean every feature becomes unlimited. Additional media can consume tokens.

There’s also the conversation. In longer conversations, I saw a few repetitive replies and inconsistent recall. Attractive images are great, but nobody wants an AI companion that keeps repeating itself. You can get a real girlfriend for that.

Pricing

• You get 5 messages, 1 custom character, and 1 image for Free.
• Monthly: $13.99/month
• Annual: $47.88/year

My Verdict: Candy AI is great for visuals but not if it’s your first AI girlfriend. Five messages are not enough to judge the experience, and it’s not worth paying before I know whether the conversations can hold my interest.

2. Romantic AI: Best for Personalized Romantic Conversations

Romantic AI puts personalization at the center of its experience. You can shape a companion’s appearance and personality, then build conversations around the kind of relationship you’re looking for.

The idea is quite appealing. However, it starts to become less appealing when you start looking beyond the character profiles.

What I Liked

I like that Romantic AI gives users control over their companion instead of forcing everyone into the same chatbot experience. Its romance-focused conversations make it a great AI girlfriend companion.

I found the conversations very enjoyable and natural. But the quality of the conversation will depend on the customization and individual experiences.

What I Disliked

Before you buy a subscription, you should really understand the Hearts system. Romantic AI offers Premium subscriptions alongside separately purchasable virtual currency, so the subscription price may not cover everything you want to do.

I also witnessed some crashes, loading problems, and failed messages in the Android app. This made the experience very jarring.

Pricing

Romantic AI offers a free Basic tier, a paid Premium subscription, and additional Hearts purchases.

My Verdict: I’d use Romantic AI if I want a personalized AI girlfriend companion. But make sure you really connect with the conversation style before buying a subscription.

3. AIGirlfriends.ai: Best for AI Images and Quick Conversations

AiGirlfriends.ai advertises a fairly ambitious feature set, including chat and generated media. But it was quite disappointing in actual testing. Its image generator performed well, but the conversations weren’t quite as convincing.

What I Liked

As I mentioned, the image-generation results were promising. In one test, I generated a character in a light blue sundress at an outdoor cafe. The generated image followed the prompt while retaining a recognizable face.

The chatbot also responded quite quickly, generally within one to four seconds in that test. It also recalled details from earlier in the same conversation.

What I Disliked

The conversation style was the biggest disappointment. The replies were quite short and flirtatious, even when the conversation could have gone somewhere more interesting.

The content filter also blocked an ordinary message mentioning a pet. Then there’s the pricing. After browsing through a few reviews, I found that the annual subscription renews at a whopping price of $240/year once the introductory period ends. That’s quite misleading.

Pricing

• $5.91/month on the yearly plan
• $9.99/month on the quarterly plan
• $12.99 for a single month

My Verdict: I’d put AiGirlfriends.ai on the shortlist for people interested in generating companion images. That’s about it. I am not at all impressed by the conversation style or quality.

4. DreamGF: Best for Creating a Custom AI Girlfriend

DreamGF is aimed at people who want to build a virtual girlfriend around a specific look and personality. The customization feature is appealing, but I found one discrepancy. The advertised starting price can be very different from the renewal price.

What I Liked

The character builder is the main attraction. You can personalize your companion and explore romantic scenarios rather than being limited to a generic chatbot. DreamGF also offers image generation and voice features on paid plans.

I also like that new users can try the platform before committing to a subscription. That is useful when you are still figuring out whether you prefer character creation or conversation-focused apps.

What I Disliked

The pricing is something you should look at. The advertised monthly price is $12.99, but I found out that the actual renewal price was $25.99. The annual offer also had a substantially higher renewal cost.

The free experience has limitations too. The trial allowed a small number of messages but restricted access to paid image and voice features.

Pricing

• First month: $12.99
• Monthly renewal: $25.99

My Verdict: DreamGF is great if you want to create a custom AI girlfriend companion. But be careful with the introductory offers.

5. Kupid AI: Best for Voice Messages and Personalized Companions

Kupid AI takes personalization a step further by advertising voice messages, generated photos and videos, and memory across conversations. Those features sound promising on paper, but the free plan has a fairly clear ceiling.

What I Liked

The customization options are expensive. Kupid AI offers more than 40 settings for shaping a companion’s appearance, personality, voice, and background. I like that level of control because it gives me more say in the kind of character I want to interact with.

Its voice and video features are another point of difference. Instead of keeping every interaction inside a text box, the platform lets you receive voice messages, photos, and short videos. However, these features are only available on the paid plan

What I Disliked

The free allowance is small. You get around 15 messages, and voice messages and videos are reserved for paid users. That’s only enough to explore the interface.

I also didn’t like the billing structure. It advertises prices per week, including discounted rates tied to annual billing.

Pricing

• Free: Around 15 messages
• Pro: $179/year
• Ultra: $299/year

My Verdict: Kupid AI is a great AI girlfriend companion if you prioritize voice interactions and personalized characters.

6. Replika: Best for Ongoing AI Companionship

Replika has a different appeal from the visual-first AI girlfriend platforms. Its focus is on maintaining an ongoing conversation with a companion, rather than making character creation or generated images the main attraction. That matters if you’re looking for an AI GF companion you can return to regularly.

What I Liked

The biggest advantage is the free chat option. Users can message their companion without paying, customize an avatar, and have ongoing conversations. That is better than other AI girlfriend apps that only offer a handful of free messages.

I also like the companion-first approach. The experience is built around an ongoing relationship with a recognizable avatar, rather than relying entirely on a gallery of characters.

What I Disliked

The free version doesn’t include everything. Features like voice messaging, background calls, image generation, and relationship options are behind paid access. With higher tiers, you also get smarter conversations and additional memory capabilities.

Pricing

Replika offers free text chatting, with several paid subscription tiers for additional features. The pricing varies across regions and platforms. I would advise checking the official pricing before buying a subscription.

My Verdict: Replika is great if you want to explore AI companionship without buying an expensive subscription. Its ongoing chat feature is a genuine advantage.

7. Character.AI: Best for Free Character Conversations

Character.AI is a little different from the other platforms on this list. Rather than focusing exclusively on AI girlfriends, it gives you a huge range of fictional characters to chat with. That variety is its biggest strength and also the reason why this AI girlfriend platform is one of the most popular in this niche.

What I Liked

The character library is the main attraction. You can explore different personalities, fictional scenarios, and conversational styles instead of being locked into one virtual girlfriend. I also like that the free tier supports ongoing character chats, although premium features and usage limits vary by plan.

What I Disliked

Character.AI has a significant limitation for people specifically seeking a romantic companion. Its content rules restrict explicit sexual conversations. If that’s what you’re looking for, a dedicated AI girlfriend platform will suit you better.

Pricing

Character.AI offers free character chats and a paid subscription. Its annual pricing costs $94.99.

My Verdict: I’d consider Character.AI for variety and free conversations, not for an unrestricted romantic experience.

8. Anima: Best for Relationship-Style Conversations

Anima takes a more personal approach to AI companionship. The idea is to have a character you can return to for casual conversations, playful exchanges, and relationship-style interaction. What interests me here is the emphasis on ongoing companionship rather than a huge marketplace of fictional characters.

What I Liked

Anima gives users room to customize their companion and shape the conversational experience. The AI girlfriend companion also remembers what users share and adapting to their conversational style. Those are useful qualities to look for in an AI companion.

I also like that you can get started without paying. That gives users a chance to explore the basic experience before deciding whether premium features are worth the expense.

What I Disliked

The main catch is the distinction between free access and paid features. However, privacy is a major issue. The Google Play listing says that the app may collect personal information, photos, videos, and other data. Make sure to read the privacy policy before sharing anything sensitive.

Pricing

Anima offers free access with additional features. Current subscriptions vary by offer, so you should check the pricing on Anima’s app.

My Verdict: Anima is great if I wanted a customizable companion for regular conversations rather than a platform built around generating images. Start with the free version, check how well it maintains context, and only buy the subscription once you vibe with the AI character.

9. CrushOn.AI: Best for Character-Driven Roleplay

CrushOn.AI is worth considering if you enjoy building conversations around fictional personalities and roleplay scenarios. Unlike platforms that focus mainly on creating a visually appealing girlfriend, it puts more emphasis on the characters themselves and the interactions you can build with them.

What I Liked

The free tier is more useful than a five-message trial. CrushOn.AI offers unlimited chats on free models, plus 100 monthly message credits for Pro models. You can also explore community characters to create your own.

I also like the focus on longer roleplay. The platform has larger context windows on paid tiers, which can help preserve more of a conversation’s context.

What I Disliked

The credit system takes some figuring out. Free-model chats and Pro-model credits have different allowances, so I’d avoid interpreting “unlimited chat” as unlimited access to every model.

There’s a privacy consideration, too. The free-tier chat history is deleted after seven days of inactivity. If you’re building a long-running roleplay, you will definitely need to buy a paid plan.

Pricing

• Free: Unlimited free-model chats and 100 monthly Pro credits
• Standard: $5.99/month
• Premium: $14.99/month
• Luxe: $39.99/month

My Verdict: If roleplay and character variety are my priority, I’d definitely use CrushOn.AI. Its free access gives you more room to explore than most competitors.

10. EVA AI: Best for Mobile AI Companionship

EVA AI takes a relationship-simulator approach, with customizable characters, shared memories, and conversations that are meant to evolve over time. What makes it interesting is the emphasis on building a connection rather than browsing an endless library of fictional characters.

What I Liked

I like the focus on personalization. EVA AI lets users explore different personalities and create their own characters. It also offers shared memories and evolving interactions. That’s better than a chatbot that treats every conversation as a fresh start.

The app is available on the App Store. It’s perfect for users who prefer a mobile companion rather than a browser-based service.

What I Disliked

The pricing structure needs attention. There are multiple membership options and separate Neuron purchases.

I also wouldn’t choose EVA AI for explicit adult conversations. It prohibits sexually explicit and pornographic content. If you are looking for something like that, you are better off with adult-oriented AI girlfriend platforms.

Pricing

The app is free to download, but some features require a subscription or Neurons. A one-month membership costs ₹1,189 and a 12-month membership costs ₹1,499.

My Verdict: I’d consider EVA AI if I wanted a mobile-first companion with customizable personalities and ongoing interactions. But I’d check the Neuron costs and subscription benefits before committing.

How to Choose the Best AI Girlfriend App?

After comparing these platforms, I’d focus on three things before signing up.

• How much free access you actually get
• Whether the conversations stay interesting
• What happens to your data?

Start with the free allowance. Five messages and unlimited basic chat are very different offers. I wouldn’t pay for an app until I’d established what I could do without a subscription and which features are locked behind a paywall.

Next, think about what you want from the experience. If visual customization is your priority, Candy AI or DreamGF may be worth exploring. If you want ongoing conversations, I’d start with Replika or Character.AI. For character-driven roleplay, CrushOn.AI is another option.

Finally, read the privacy policy. AI girlfriend conversations can contain personal details that you wouldn’t normally share with a public service. Avoid sharing your passwords, financial information, or anything that could identify or expose you in real life.

Are Free AI Girlfriend Apps Really Free?

Yes, but the word free can be misleading. Some platforms offer ongoing text conversations, while others give you a small number of messages before asking you to subscribe.

Image generation, voice calls, and other premium features may require separate credits even after you pay for a membership. I’d look a the complete cost rather than the headline price:

• Message limits: How much can you chat without paying?
• Feature restrictions: Are images, voice, and memory included?
• Renewal terms: Does a promotional subscription become more expensive later?
• Extra credits: Will you need to buy tokens for regular use?

Final Words

I wouldn’t pick an AI girlfriend app based on its promotional images alone. The more useful question is whether its conversations, free allowance, and paid features justify the time and money you’ll spend on it.

My advice is to start with a free tier, test the actual experience, and only upgrade when you know which features you value. A virtual companion should be worth the cost after you’ve tried it, not because its homepage convinced you to pay upfront.
